I want to lose my body fat?

E-mail Print

Case study:

I am 5'10, weigh about 220lbs with 30% body fat, from what a scale has told me. I would to lose my body fat but at the same time gain muscle. I get confused what kind of workout I should do.

Here are somethings I have already accomplished:
- a balance diet
- working out 5 days a week
- know what exercises to do

When I go to the gym I always do a split workout or somethings do a push/pull/ legs and abs week.

I'm thinking of minimizing my lifting by only doing 24 sets for each muscle group and try to concentrate on cardio. But when I lift I usually take my supplements such as glutamine, protein, and strength enhancers. Should I still be taking those even thought I want to lose my body fat?

I have read several articles that state ab workouts are overrated and one can even go without doing them. Even Jackie Warner, you know the personal trainer to the stars who has a hit show on Bravo, says she never does them and there is no need to do them.
The reason being is everyone has a six/eight pack but one just has to lose the fat to be able to see it. Core exercises are recommended along with diet and cardio.
So, what's the real deal? Yes, no? The workout program I was given has them for once, maybe twice a week.
Thanks everyone.

Answer: This guy want to basically lose body fat at the same time he gain lean muscle.  He can successfully decrease his body fat percentage with a good combination of cardiovascular exercises, weightlifting and diet.  You don't have to sacrafice lean muscle mass when you do extra cardio.  The key is making sure you eat enough lean calories to make up for the extra burned calories from cardio.
